The Entertainment Industries Council (EIC) initiatives were Encore!s before Encore! were Encores! Founded in 1983, EIC’s mission is to:

  • [Encourage] the entertainment industry to more effectively address and accurately depict major health and social issues.

  • [Serve] as a bridge for information between the entertainment industry and public policy members.

  • [Be] instrumental in affecting social change through providing educational materials, research and training for entertainment industries.

  • [Promote] and [recognize] the accomplishments of the entertainment industry in addressing public health and social issues.

  • [Develop] programs to foster volunteerism to support public and private partnerships designed to serve the entertainment industry workplace and further enhance the industry’s outreach to the general public.

Kudos to EIC for leveraging the influence of their members for key health and social issues, such as substance abuse and mental health. Now, all they need is more of a focus on the health care delivery side of their focus issues. Helping people be healthy and live better lives is also about making sure they know about the government, private and community services and programs that can support them. Call me, y’all! I have some great ideas for how you can weave better this angle into your programs.

For example, EIC TV is great! And, it would be even better with messages at the end of each segment that share more information about the topic AND related health services. For the video below, here is a great resource for finding mental health treatment and support services in your area: SAMHSA Behavioral Health Treatment Services Locator.
